Basing Woods is a natural woodland, so accessibility is a little different:
- Paths are wide, but mostly earth and gravel
- Some gentle slopes and uneven ground
- Can be muddy after rain
- No toilets or café inside the woods
- Benches available in the central section
- Best for: walkers, families, and people comfortable with natural terrain
Wheelchairs and pushchairs can manage some parts, but the full loop may be challenging. We always walk at a gentle pace and support everyone in the group.
🚪 Where We Start
We begin behind Popley Fields Community Centre, right at the woodland entrance.
🕒 Walk Directions & Timings
0–5 Minutes: Entering the Woods -Walk through the entrance barrier, Follow the wide main path, Ignore the small side paths, Enjoy the tall oak, ash, and beech trees
5–15 Minutes: Northern Woodland - Keep left at the first big junction, Follow the broad path as it gently climbs, Look out for robins, great tits, woodpeckers, and nuthatches
15–25 Minutes: Outer Woodland Loop -We will pass:
- Mixed conifer woodland
- Small clearings
- Fern-covered banks
- Deadwood habitats full of insects and fungi
- Stay on the widest path.
25–35 Minutes: Eastern Section -Follow the path as it bends south, Walk past open glades, Reach a large junction, Turn right to head back through the centre
35–45 Minutes: Central Woodland - This quiet area has:
- A denser canopy
- Mature trees
- Spring wildflowers
- Bluebells (April–May)
- Woodland benches
45–55 Minutes: Western Paths - Take one last loop, Enjoy open grassy rides, Spot squirrels and birds, Enjoy the peaceful woodland atmosphere
55–60 Minutes: Returning - Follow the final stretch back to the entrance, Finish at Popley Fields Community Centre
